On Saturday April 8, Eastern Shore Rabbit Rescue and Education Center Inc. (ESRREC), a Rock Hall-based charity, will set up an Easter-themed photo booth at Concord Pet Foods & Supplies of Middletown from 11am to 2pm.
With a choice of either a cute pet rabbit in a basket or the Easter Bunny himself, families can purchase a professional keepsake photo from ESRREC (digital $10, printed and framed $20).
By bringing its rescued rabbits to the photo shoot, ESRREC aims to raise awareness that – like other pets – abandoned bunnies need homes. As part of its mission, ESRREC focuses on educating potential adopters regarding proper care and attention. Without such preparation, new pet rabbit owners often fail to understand the commitment, leading to abandoned rabbits particularly in the months following Easter.
“We are very pleased to be partnering with Concord Pet, which has a wide array of food, hay, toys, and cages for pet rabbits,” said ESRREC President and founder Cora Dickson. “Furthermore, Middletown is a rapidly growing community across the Maryland border, just 45 minutes from Rock Hall. We would like to encourage Middletown residents to visit our shelter if they are interested in adopting a rabbit into their family.”
Since it opened its shelter in April 2015, ESRREC has taken in 63 rabbits and conducted 40 adoptions. All ESRREC adoptable rabbits are litter box trained and fed a healthy diet including mainly fresh hay from local farms.
Through collecting donations and other fundraising, ESRREC has also been able to spay or neuter 45 rabbits to get them ready for new homes. The rabbits are transferred from regional shelters, are surrendered directly by owners, or are brought to ESRREC after being found as strays.
