For the fourth straight year, Rock Hall-based nonprofit Eastern Shore Rabbit Rescue and Education Center (ESRREC) will join “Clear the Shelters,” a nationwide pet adoption drive August 1-31 to help find loving homes for animals in need.

NBC and Telemundo owned stations are teaming up with hundreds of organizations across the country to host a database of participating shelters. More than 700,000 pets have found their forever homes through this annual campaign.

In the previous three years, the campaign brought a total of 45 adoptions for ESRREC, which has had over 300 adoptions over its seven year history. The shelter is currently open to visitors by appointment only. However, the shelter will have walk-in hours 12-3 PM on Sunday July 31 for a “Clear the Shelters Kick-off,” and an Open House 12-5 PM on Saturday August 13.

As part of the campaign, ESRREC will offer reduced adoption fees during the month of August: single rabbits $50 and bonded pairs $75, with both fees discounted by $25. All rabbits are spayed/neutered, litter box trained, and socialized. ESRREC also vaccinates for the rabbit disease RHDV-2. Currently 17 rabbits live at the shelter on Main Street, cared for by various volunteers throughout the week. An additional 25 rabbits live in foster care around the region.

In order to reach a wider range of adopters, ESRREC is planning to hold adoption meet-and-greets at Petco stores throughout August in Annapolis, MD; Ocean City, MD; and Seaford DE.

In September 2021, ESRREC  was included in a WRDE (NBC affiliate) feature story about Clear the Shelters. Watch the archived video here.

In August 2020, ESRREC was featured on NBC-4 News (Washington DC) with an interview via Zoom. Watch the archived video here.
